Illustrating the Importance of the 5 Years Leading Up To and Following Retirement
October 3, 2022
Welcome to Wealth Enhancement & Preservation’s Market Minute, where we get to update you on everything that happened in the financial markets this week. My name is Darrin Cohen, and I am the CEO of Wealth E&P.
It was another rough week for the markets last week, with all three major indices down about 3%. Even the Bond index was down about 1% and significantly down for the year. However, if you’re in our All-Weather strategies, fortunately, we’re in a very low-risk proposition right now. We’re in the lowest risk levels we could possibly be at, so we’re losing only a very small fraction of the overall returns of the markets.
I wanted to talk today about the sequence of returns and the impact on performance in your retirement income years. As you can see in the chart below, we’re looking at a 60-year period, which is essentially your entire investment life.
This chart assumes you’re retiring in about year 30 of work. What we’re looking at is the impact on the success of your retirement income for each individual year. I have done the math for you: if you look at the five years prior and five years after retirement, about 75% of the overall impact of success in your retirement income plan is based on those ten years. If you’re thinking about retirement or you’re early on in retirement, this is a super important time period; it is much more critical than it is in the accumulation years to pay attention to market performance and volatility. It is vital to make sure we’re managing that in a very impactful way.
